Louis François Joseph Patouart - Sonata for 2 Cellos and Double Bass ( and Continuo), Op.2, No.6, Urtext edition. Score and parts available as a PDF download, 16 pages.

Louis François Joseph Patouart (1719-1793) was a French cellist and composer who published two sets of 6 cello sonatas as his Op.1 and Op.2. At the end of his Op.2 sonatas, we find that the sixth sonata is actually a trio sonata written for two cellos and “contra basso”. While the bass part includes figured bass for a keyboard instrument, the instrumentation clearly calls for a double bass as a part of the continuo group.

What type of contrabass instrument did Patouart have in mind? The specifics are impossible to tell from the score, since the bass line goes all the way down to C, but the split continuo part in the 2nd minuet could possible point to a low E boundary. Either way, double bassists can be sure that this is an original chamber work that includes the double bass, originally published in Paris in 1746. This score was made directly from the first edition of the piece and does not include any editorial markings or alterations.
